HISTORY

In the early days of the 19th century, Dimasalang was a mere barangay of Pueblo Palanas. Its name then was Naro, a name taken from the native word “NA ARO”, meaning taken free. Given free in this place that time were commodities specially fish.Around 1875, Naro became a pueblo or town. Pillaged the Moro bandits, Pueblo Naro was completely deserted. Around 1880, not far from this place there grew again a new fishing village called by the settlers as “Bag-ong Naro or a new Naro, situated between Palanas and Uson. The new naro became the bone of contention of the boundary conflicts of these towns. To gain control of the new Naro, the Municipal president of Palanas, Don Potenciano made it in 1904 the seat of the municipal government by which process the status of Palanas was reduced into a mere barrio. He named Naro as Dimasalang, the penname of Dr. Jose P. Rizal. In 1901, the Provincial Government of Sorsogon ordered the annexation of the Municipality of Dimasalang to the Guarena for the reconsideration of the said order. Consequently, on January 1, 1911, Uson was instead fused to the Municipality of Dimasalang thus making Uson a mere barrio together with Palanas. However, in 1948 and in 1952 Uson and Palanas respectively were emancipated and became legal municipalities.
